Starting a startup: Lessons Learnt
Bob Whitson - President and CEO, Cofounder , Sierra Logic
Prior to co-founding Sierra Logic, Bob served as World Wide Marketing Manager at Agilent Technologies, Storage Networking Division. There he was responsible for the division's worldwide revenue for the Tachyon Family of Fibre Channel Controller chips and Host Bus Adapter product lines. He served as guest speaker/member of panel discussions at major storage industry events globally. Before Agilent, Bob held numerous management jobs at Hewlett-Packard for 16 years, both in marketing and engineering. Also, he has been involved in multiple acquisitions and divestitures over the years. Bob received his degree from University of Wisconsin.
Mark Randall - President and Chief Magician, Serious Magic
Mark's career spans over twenty years of developing video software technology to empower businesses, schools and individuals to communicate in the "language of television". He founded Serious Magic in 2001 inspired by Arthur C. Clarke's observation: "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." Since its inception, Serious Magic has released several industry-first products including, Visual Communicator, a new kind of desktop software application that enables people with no video experience to easily create professional video presentations. Visual Communicator has won "Product of the Year" from seven national magazines and is in use by over half the Fortune 500.
Other industry firsts includeULTRA, the first software to make high-quality chroma keying and virtual sets practical for low-cost video producers. DV Rack, video production software designed to work with videographers during shooting. And, Vlog It, the world's first video blog creation software. Mark has been named one of "The 50 Most Influential People in Streaming" by Streaming Magazine and his work has been honored with PC Magazine's Technical Excellence award, a national Addy award, an Ad-O and Advertising Age's "Corporate Video of the Year".
Libby Koehn - Founder, Chief Customer Officer and Product Evangelist, Compassoft
Libby Koeh is the Founder , Chief Customer Officer and Product Evangelist at Compassoft since 2003. Immediately before Compassoft, she was the Chief Operating Officer / VP Information Technology Consulting for Westin Engineering, where she managed both the software development and professional services organizations. Ms. Koehn is a member of the National Science Foundation's SBIR/STTR peer review panel for IT-projects. The NSF first became aware of Ms. Koehn after Compassoft's (formerly Compass a.i., Inc.) was selected as the most promising new software solution for the 2002 World's Best Technology Award.
Compass a.i. was selected as one of the top 3 most promising new technologies and came in First Runner Up in the overall category. Compass a.i. competed against 50 different technologies including new advancements in biotechnology, nanotechnology, information technology and general technology. The World's Best Technology award was sponsored by the National Association of Seed and Venture Funds and the Federal Laboratory Consortium for Technology Transfer.
Mitchell Koulouris - Founder & CEO of DMI
DMI is an online music distribution portal headquartered in Sacramento. He is responsible for driving DMI's corporate vision and for global partnerships and strategic business
development.
Koulouris spent the last 13 years in the technology publishing sector
working primarily with Microsoft in technical magazine publishing, content
and community development, and event production. He founded Informant
Communications Group, an award-winning publishing company in 1991.
Panel Moderator - Scott Hervey, Partner, Weintraub, Genshlea, Chediak & Sproul
Scott is a shareholder with the firm. His practice focuses on intellectual property matters, issues concerning the Internet, licensing and entertainment law. Scott's intellectual property practice involves the representation of companies primarily in the areas of trademarks, copyrights and licensing. He regularly practices before the United States Patent and Trademark Office on trademark registrations, opposition and cancellation proceedings. Scott also handles trademark and copyright infringement matters, including Internet based trademark disputes. Scott's entertainment practice focuses primarily on the music and independent film industries. He has represented talent, producers, managers, production companies and independent record labels in a variety of transactions.
